Every year, the SBW Berlin Scholarship In Germany is given to young people from all over the world who come from low-income homes and wish to apply the skills they acquired in Germany to support long-term, nonprofit projects, ideally back home.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants may apply if they belong to one of the following groups:
- Foreign nationals who require development assistance in their home country
- Homeless foreigners
- Recognized refugees
- Individuals with a settlement permit
- Holders of a long-term EU residence permit
- EU/EEA students who previously worked in Germany
- EU/EEA students with permanent residency under the Freedom of Movement Act

Application Requirements
To qualify, candidates must:
- Be between 18 and 30 years old
- Have volunteer or professional experience in the nonprofit sector
- Plan to work for at least 18 months in their home country after graduation
- Have a low household income
- Have no first-degree relatives living permanently in Germany
- Not have lived in Germany for more than 18 months prior to applying
- Hold academic grades equivalent to a German GPA of 2.0 or better
- Be enrolled in the 1st–3rd semester of their studies OR applying for a master’s degree shortly before/after completing a bachelor’s degree
Language Requirements
Knowledge of German is not required, but applicants must:
- Be proficient in English
- Meet the language requirements of their chosen university or program
- Submit official language certificates only after passing the interview stage
Speaking German is not necessary for applicants. But they have to speak English well. Candidates must fulfill the language requirements of a particular program or university in Berlin or Potsdam in order to pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree. An authentic language certificate is only needed during the verification process. Official language certificates (in German or English) will only be needed from candidates who have been invited to a face-to-face interview or videoconference and have successfully completed the interview.
